SWACH spends weekend tabling across 2 counties

Over the weekend of September 14 and 15, Southwest Washington Accountable Community of Health had the pleasure to be involved in the Vancouver Peace and Justice Fair and the El Grito Festival, both highlighting two different and equally important messages.

On Saturday, SWACH tabled at the 21st annual Vancouver Peace and Justice Fair, a community event highlighting the work of people and organizations working to promote peace and justice.

The fair featured 46 exhibitors showcasing the work and creative spirit of individuals, social justice groups, peace organizations, faith communities, performers, artists, businesses and environmental activists.

“It was a wonderful experience of community coming together to help solve a complex injustice that exists,” said SWACH’s Basevi Adamo, HealthConnect Operations Manager. “It was a good event and even with the threat of rain, there was a healthy attendance, and all sponsors showed up. Lots of resources there for people to engage with. As usual, our button making station was going gangbusters.”

On Sunday, SWACH had the privilege to table at the third annual El Grito Festival in White Salmon. The event kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month at Rheingarten Park, honoring the deep history, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose families come from Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

“Over 650 people showed up to Rheingarten Park in White Salmon on Sunday to celebrate Latinx culture and community!” said SWACH’s Heather Sheppard, Equity and Collaborative Impact Manager. “There were delicious tamales, tacos, churros, and more, along with live music, dancing, and vendors with community resources. The SWACH table was bustling with a very popular Button Maker and amazing swag. The day was filled with laughter, delighted children, and some really good dancing. WAGAP did an excellent job planning and hosting such a wonderful event. El Grito was a perfect way to kick off Hispanic Heritage month.”

Although the title “El Grito” refers to the Mexican Independence battle cry, the purpose of El Grito is to bring all Latin American cultures together with local community members to share their heritage.
